Portuguese custard – The original recipe

Preparation time: 30 min
Cooking time: 1hour
Servings: 6 to 8

Small detour from Portugal to discover this traditional recipe, the Portuguese custard, also called Pudim de leite condensado. It is a traditional, very well-known and easy to prepare dessert loved by adults and our small ones. I never get tired of eating this during family gatherings and it sure brings back lots of childhood memories to my husband.

1l of milk
150g of sugar
6 eggs
2 yolks
1 vanilla pod
150g of sugar for the caramel

Preheat your oven to 180°C.

Boil the milk and the vanilla pod cut in half. Add the sugar and let the sugar melt.

In a bowl, mix well the eggs, Then spill the milk into the eggs.

In a saucepan, melt the sugar into caramel. Once it is nicely brown, pour it into a baking pan.

Put it in the oven and cook it in a bain-marie at 150°C during 1h, to verify if the custard is well cooked, you can insert a knife in it and if the blade is clear.

Let cool then put it in the fridge for at least 6 hours, and then when you want to serve you can remove the custard from the baking pan.
